The usual fortnightly Ejecting was held last night. Present Grs. Kilgour (in the Chair), Bawden. Chappell, Farrell, Hume, McAndrew, McGrowan, and Kenshaw.
The minutes were read and confirmed
Cr. Speight's resignation for South Ward was received -<-Cr, IDlgour pro posed, and Or, Hume seconded that Mr Honiss be appointed Eeturning Officer to conduct the election for his successor.—Cr. Eenshaw moved and Cr. Baw-den seconded an amendment that Mr Woodward be ap^ pointed.—After discussion, the amendment was put —For; C?s. Eenshaw, McGowan, Farrell, and Bawden.—Against • Crs. Mennie, McAndrew, Chappell, a^d Hume.—The Chairman gays faja vote against, and the motion was declared carried.
A telegram voucher for £142 11s Id balance of September gold duty, was re' ceived.
The Mayor telegraphed that afte? a long interview with the Premie? re Borough damage through County mullock choking the creeks, the only remedies proposed were either for the Borough and County
to amalgamate, or else for the damage to be a first charge on gold duty before division.—Tho latter proposal was voted an excellent one provided a disinterested person were appointed arbitrator. An offer by Mr D. Henderson to lay a water supply pipe to the premises of a number of Karaka residents was referred to the Water Supply Committee.
The Inspector of Nuisances was instructed to take steps to abate the nuisance of the drain complained of by Mr E. E. McGregor and another gentleman.
The New Zealand Bank return of the gold banked during October was: — Borough, 14140z5.' 14dwts; County, 1608ozs. 6dwts; Piako County, 7510z5. lldwts. HEPOETS. The Works Committee's report was adopted as follows :—That the Foreman of Works repair the hole in the footpath," Queen street, coat Broad street with gravel at a cost of £10 or £12, and raise the Noki Noki creek culvert for about 20 feet at junction of Eolleston and Eich« mond streets; that, the Sunbeam creek culvert be cleared out, and the side raised about 18 inches; and that a culvert be laid on the top of the culvert now carryv ing the Big Pump water across Tararu road, and that the low part of the footpath be raised.
The Foreman of Works detailed the operations of the month, recommended that drays carrying heavy loads of qaartz should have 4-inch wheel tires, in order to save the vrear on the road metal, that the Waiotahi road be at once metalled^ and that carters coming down it either skid or brake their wheels, so as to protect the water«tables. — Eeferred to Board of Works.
The Water Supply Committee had given authority to extend the Davy street submain, so as to supply Mr T. W. Clark; and to lay a sub-main iv iLcddell street, at a cost of £8, the extra income to be £2 per year. TLe Works and Water Supply Committee presented the scheme prepared by Cr Farrell, who proposed that tbe duties of Foreman of Works and Turncock, and the entire management of Borough Works and appliances, be undertaken by one man (ha to engage a man capable of doing the Turncock's work), and to present monthly reports of the stock in hand, and of each workman's time in each Ward; also to discharge the duties of Inspector of Nuisances and Inspector under the Fire Eate Act. —The question was adjourned till next meeting.
OTHER MATTERS. Cr Wilson was granted leave of absence for one month.
Cr Mennie gave notice of motion— " That Mr A. Fleming be appointed Borough Valuator for the ensuing year."
A lengthy report from the Finance Committee, on the Borough's position, was considered in Committee, it being finally decided to discuss it at next meeting.
