(FBOM OUR OWN COTtBESrONDENT.)
Paeeoa, Yesterday. A meeting of ratepayers was held in the Public Hall on Saturday last for the purpose of farming a Vigilance Committee to look after the interests of the district; Mr F. Cock in the chair.—Mr A. J. Thorpe, after explaining; the object for which the meeting was convened, said that it was high time the residents of the district took some steps towards enquiring into certain matters affecting their general welfare. In the first place the present system of road construction, as carried out in this district, was discreditable alike to the Thames County Council and the contractors. It was quite patent to all who took any interest in such matters that the road works carried on by contract in this district of late had not been ©ompleted according to specifications, and as the ratepayers would be taxed for the ensuing ten years to meet the cost of the same, it was their duty to see that they got fair value for the money so expended, —Mr H. C. Wick proposed that Messrs J. Phillips, J. Goon.an, F, Cock, A. J Thorp, and the mover bo appointed a Vigilance Committee to carry out the views of the meeting.—Mr Comes ob jected, on the ground that the committee as named by Mr Wick, would be composed entirely of Paeroa men. He suggested that some of the outlying settlers be appointed to act in conjunction with
those already named. —At this juncture several gentlemen endeavored to ventilate their respective views at the same time s and a wordy battle raged for fully half an hour, during which time parliamentary etiquette was practically ignored. At length peace was proclaimed, and it was resolved that the following gentlemen be appointed to form a Yigilanco Committee to watch over the interests of the district for one year from date, four to form a quorum, viz.: Messrs T. Logan, J. G-oonan, J. Savage, F. Cock, A. J. Thorp, Henry Alley, E. M. Corbett, J. Phillips, senr., JEL. C. Wick (Treasurer), and T. E. Shaw (Secretary). It was also decided that the district be canvassed for subscriptions in aid of the work about to be;undertaken by the committee. Contributions were then handed in by several gentlemen present, and the usual vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings. At a subsequent meeting of the committee it was resolved to forward a letter to the Thames County Council, informing that body that it was the intention of the committee to thoroughly investigate certain alleged malpractices in I connection with road contracts in this Riding. KABANGAHAKE. TBy Telegbaph.] Paeboa, This day. The Hauraki battery is now runniog full time on quartz from the Ivanhoe and Sir Walter Cscott claims. The Ivanhoe stuff is said to be showing up for a return, of over an ounce per ton, and the S%>f^i stuff for a return of over 3ozs per ton. There is nothing fresh to report from the other claims.
