AUCKLAND.

This day. Mr W. J. Speight has been appointed manner of- the Dunedin branch of the Equitable Life Society. A new steel steamer, the Clansman, built at Glasgow, for the Northern Steam Navigation Co., arrived here yesterday, after a passage of 93 days. Sue is 333 tons, and did 12| knots on a trial trip. Capt. W. H. Braddick is in charge. A Queen street drapery firm has lighted its establishment with the electric light. A case of great jahumauity is reported. Yesterday morning a tingle girl liyjng in

service at Parnell gave birth to a child, and an hour after accouchement she was bundled out of the house, and after some difficulty, quarters were found for her at the Old People's ilefuge. Both mother and child were scantily clothed. A proclamation prohibiting the importation of apples offected with the codlin motb, having been gazetted on the eve of the arrival of the mail boat from 'Frisco, has created alarm amongst dealers who have consignments coming. Consul Griffen, at the instance of the Chamber of Commerce, has promised to cable the purport of the proclamation to 'Frisco. It is £xpected that importers here- having consignments by the incoming steamer will cause them to bo sent on to Sydney rather than attempt to land them here.
