WELLINGTON.
This day. A Salted Prospect. At the E.M. Court, Masterton, Perry and McKenna, gold prospectors, were committed for trial for obtaining money on false pretences. The case arose out of prisoners circulating a rumor to tbe effect that they had discovered a reef near Masterton, which it is alleged, -has been " salted." A man named Alexander FojaytV
Anderson was arrested at Otaki yesterday, and brought „ before the Court this morning on a charge of the embezzlement of £240, belonging to the Board of Guardians of the Brownlow Hill Workhouse, Liverpool. On being arrested he told the detective he thought it would hardly pay to take him back, as be was guaranteed at Home by the Board. Accused has £50 to his credit in a Wellington bank, and had £17 5s on him when arrested. He had purchased the good-will of a store at Otaki for £50, and was attending to the bustuess at the time of his arrest. He was remanded for seven days. The police authorities have wired news of bis arrest to England, and expect that a police officer is on his way out. Bail was allowed, himself in £200, and two sureties of £100 each.
