WAR IN CHINA.
Hongkong, October 5. News is to hand from Formosa showing that the French were completely successful in their operations on the island. Admiral Courbet has secured possession of Kelung, and a strong body of French troops occupied the town. The Chinese batteries at Tamsin were captured by Admiral Lespes, and have since been dismantled and rendered ineffective.

London, October 5. The Times adheres to the statement published to the effect that General Lord Woleslay had been recalled. The various Agents-General, excepting Sir Saul Samuel, have requested an interview with Lord Derby, to press the settlement of the Pacific question. The Marquis of Htfrtington, speaking at Lancashire, implied that a comproraise was possible if tho Marquis of Salisbury withdrew his opposition to tho Franchise Bill, after seeing that the Redistribution Bill was fair. Mr Foster and Mr Morley, M.P.'s, addressed a meeting of seventy thousand people at Leeds on the Fran^ chise Bill.
