BBPOBTS. The following report from the Engineer was laid on the table:—"The damage done to the County works by the floods it the early portion of the month of August were reported on at a sr-eeial meeting o< the Council. An increase in the ordinary expenditure has in const quence been in- . cm red during the month. I would reer m mend that the main road between the Kauaeranga and Puriri bridges be maintained by contract, and that tenders bf called for the work.' A start has been made on the survey of the proposed high level j^Ce from the Puru creek, and a re -vpprt on the length, prolbßble cost, &c, YwiH be ready in about fourteen clays. i^ss have made arrange ments with the Mining Inspector to visit the residence site occupied by Mr McCormick, and re ferred to in bis letter to the Council. I Would recommend that two small houses on ; the Ohinerauri main .road—one half way between Kirikiri and Puriri, •and the other half way between Hikutaia and Paeroa—be purchased for the use of the men employed on the road.—Alex. Aitken, County.Surveyor. MrLittlejehn reported re the Ohine muri Hiding:—" During the past month a considerable amount of damage was done by the heavy rains. Katikati Boad : The greatest amount of damage done to this road was in the weiy of slips, and - they have since been cleared away. The bosh portion, between Mackaytown and Owharoa, is in a bad state, but very little can be dene to it ;"tbe part that is metalled is standing well. Te Aroba Boad: KntDfrous slips cccurrpcl on the Eotokobii Gorge, and about one chain of the road slipped away: it is iqow passable for wheel traffic, but a good deal yet remains to be done before it is in good repair.
Another boat has been fixed in position at Mackaytown at a cost of £9. Some damage was done by the flood at Robson's. in Paeroa ; about | a chain is broken, and the culvert lifted—it is not large enough
to carry the waiter away, and so several gardens and premises gf t flooded; also the road near Shaw's, which caused it to be all but impassable; the only remedy I see for it is to enlarge'the drain and put in another culvert to the river ; this would cost about £50. The Paeroa-Puke road is in a bad state of repair. I have told Snodgrass of it several times, but he does not seem to take any notice. The junction road is impassable, which is a great inconvenience to many people. If a few chains of the fence was removed it could be made passable at a small cost. The Waitekanri road contract is completed. The connection between Te Aroba road and Karangahake is all but finished, but there are a few soft places that will require to be corduroyed before 4n3*ftgs can travel on it. I would recommend that two men be put on to do this work. The contract between the Hauraki and Golden Crown Licensed Holdings is completed."
