The Silverton Field.
Mr C. 8. Wilkinson, the geological sur« . veyor' of Victoria, has telegraphed from Thackeringa, tia Wilcannia, to the under»;J secretary of Mines, with regard; to his? examination of the mining district around Silverton, as follows :—"I have examined ■ the principal part of this district;- Various lodes of silver, lead, gold, bismuth, tin, copper manganese, and iron are scattered over a tract of country 70 miles long and 30 miles wide., but metalliferous formations extend ov.er a much-larger area; : !Po^ir till lodes have been opened near Poolamacca. They do not appeaf|large; enough to be worked alonej but otters willprobably be found in the granite in,,the:>ame. locality^" The numerous argentiferous lead lodes at Thackaripga will afford jl\ large/'supply of; ore. The present cost of transit is said to retard their development. A. water supply is much required. lam of opinion that this will become a permanent and -, lead mining district, but.the/smallness-of the majority of the lodes, the patchy occur- . rence of the "ore in them, -and the scarcity of timber and water, will make future mining work rather costly.. The present is a favorable time for sinking wells." ■
