The Political Situation.

[By Telegbaph*]

(from a coerespondent.)

Wellington, This day.

Things are still much mixed, and it is hard to predict the probable outcome. It. is asserted (hat the expected coalition between Grey and Vogel will not eventuate, as their views on the Excise and Borrowing questions are very dissimilar. Macandrew and Stout, however, do not yet despair of bringing- the coalition about, and are therefore working sedulously in the matter. Failing his obtaining; a seat in the new Ministry, Mr Hurst, the member for Waitemata, will be nominated for the Chairmanship of Committees 'by a Southern phalanx in opposition to Captain Hamlin, the late Chairman,. Mr Stout's name being mentioned as one of his sponsors. V.- : '■'.:■ -.-. . >-~ .--..■•. Mr .Montgomery is said to have stated tha,t even were Sir George Grey induced to give his allegiance to a Vogel-Ormond Ministry, the majority'of his followers would .be found in the -Opposition lobbies, and therefore the old man's support would be almost nil. From the tenor of his observations, it is evideufc Mr Montgomery-still considers himself the leader of the^Liberal party, and feels very sore about being so quietly ignored by Grey and Macandrew. Should Stout, Balknce, and Macandrew join Vogel on the Liberal ticket, the Opposition will undoubtedly consolidate, and hereafter be known as the Democratic party." /■ T\ \ '■ '■' "'.: '■' :.
