Shipping Company's 11th annual report shows (he ordinary service by the direct steamers to have given a profit of £3000. after providing for all costs of the inagurating of the scheme, • but in consequence of the charter of the Catalonia—through default of tbe Doric ■—there was a loss of £18,472 which is met by, transferring £20,000 from the fund. Two new steamers of about *l7wtons each (Kaikoraandßimutafca) are contracted to be ( completed in September and October respectively, which will enable the company to conduct a monthly service without chartering any steamers. Sailing ships continue to be a valuable adjunct to the steamers, and the company still charters considerable sailing tonnage. The directors did not propose to fill tbe vacancy on the board caused by the death of Mr Tanored, as Wm. Pearce (of John Elder and Co.) has joined the London board of advice.
