Fatal Fire;
This day.
A large fire occurred at Cook's hotel last night, tbe place being completely gutted. The fire broke out at the fireplace of one of the sitting rooms, and Saickly spread, having a firm hold before le brigade got to work. They managed, however, to prevent the whole building being destroyed, and the fire spreading to the adjoining block. Some of the furniture and stock was saved, bat the place is quite a wreck. The insurance is £1000 in the Northern on the stock, £700 in the New Zealand on the building; and £500 in the National on the building. A man named Thomas Kilroy, who was sleeping in one of the rooms, was suffocated, and his body found afterward, slightly charred. He appeared to have been dazed by the smoke, as he was found on bis hands and knees on the floor. - He could easily have escaped otherwise. ;:
