London, June 17.' The Projected Soudan Campaign. In the House of Commons this afternoon, Mr Gladstone was questioned regarding the railway material which it is alleged is being prepared at Woolwich for use at Souakim. In reply the Premier admitted the truth of the statement, and announced that Government had under consideration the expediency of constructing a line of railway from the port of • Souakim to the Nile, in view of its employment for transporting the troops composing the expedition which may possibly be despatched into the southern Soudan during the autumn. t A London, June 18.
It is currently reported in diplomatic circles that parleying regarding, the neutrality of the Suez Canal, which for some time' past has been progressing between the French and English Govern* tnents, has virtually been concluded, and a satisfactory agreement been arrived at. Constantinople,. June 17. A serious outbreak of bubonic (?) plague has occurred at Bagdad. j London, June 16. Cricket—Australians v. Cambridge University. The home team went in first, and were all out for 20.4, the highest scorers being : Bainbridge, c, 61; Studd, b, 59; Marchant, c, 34. The visitors in their first innings had put together 122 for the loss of four wickets, when the stumps were drawn. McDonnell was bowled for 25, and Mur- , doch, not out, 45. The weather was fine during the day, and^great interest is being taken in the match. London, June 17. The cricket match Australians v. Cambridge University was resumed today, the , Australian team having four wickets down for 112, continued their first innings, and remained in all day, scoring 378 before the last wicket fell. The following are the principal scores:—Murdoch, c, 132; Bon» nor, c, 44; Palmer, not out, 68; Scott, ci 37. There was a good attendance of spectators, and fine weather was again experienced. ,
