The total distance to drive is about lOJft, of which 41ft has been diiven, and the i\ef should therefore be in hand in about another three weeksf The mine is loofciing: well all through, and an improvement is noticeable in the western driv* on the Shasgingwall portion of No. 1 reef at No. 3 lerel, geld having been seen for the first time. .The;satne body of stoheiis in hand in the stopes below, and there shows gold when broken. The manager reported on Saturday :—" No. 6 level: The crosscut has been expend d 18ft this week, which makes the distance now f/om the chamber 4ift. riae country still continues tight for s'p* eely progress, but is of a good description fo: 1 gold. No. 5 level: Gu Tuesday last the south prospect, ing crosscut on the break wr.; s'arted ag£.in, and sinc3 then it has been i,cvanced 20ft. The country through which this drive is pacsing is exceedingly favorable for gold, tnd should we be .successful in cutting any leaders here, I have very livile doubt but that they will be gold-bearing. The iNo. 2 lead in the eastern, drive has opened out again, and is now about 18in. thick.. The quartz looks very welj, and carries splendid miojrals. The stopes; which are being worked] here as usual, present no material change to reporh No. 4 level: The eastern drive on No. 2 lead is now in
340 ft. from the shaft. The lead is at pre- I seal broken up by another water-ourre passing, through it. The slopes here coalinue to produce fair grade. dirt, with occasionally a few picked stone. The stopes on No. 1 reef above this level are looking better this last day or two. ISTo. 3 level: A little gold has been seen in the drive on the bangingwall portion of No. 1 reef, west of the crosscut. Driving eastward is still in hand. Tho reef looks about the same, but no gold has been seen yet. The usual number of stopes are iv progress here, and the quartz is shaping about the same at the battery.—G. S, CiAEK." MOANATAIRI. The manager reporls for last week: — "The western portion of No. 9 stopes, which we have in hand above 132 ft level, has not produced any picked stone to mention during the past week, but the quartz looks well, and shows colors when broken. No crushing stuff has been obtained from east end of stopes for tho last fortnight, as we were obliged to work a portion of unproductive ground in order *tf)' carry up passes for convenience of forking the block immediately, below Guthrie and Co. Anotiiur shift or two will complete the job. The winze from 132 ft level communicated with tunnel level last Thursday. A pass is now being fixed for the transit of quartz. Morning ' Star leaders have not being as productive as usual for some day 3 past. lam pleased to say the country in Waitemata crosscnt has very much improved in its characterfor gold since my last. The drive has been extended ,38ft 4in in the fortnight. the last lOffc having intersected several leaders varrying "from 2 to 12 inches Some'of the stone contains copper end other favorable minerals for gold. 'One of the leaders oarries a good deal of antimony. Oar trial parcel from No. 9, tunnel level, is not finished yet.—J. G. Vivian." HEIGHT SMILE. Retorting took place to-day/ producing 35ozs sdwts gold, reduced to 33ozs on molting. The quantity crushed was 19 loads general dirt and 20ibs of picked stone. Six loads from the main reef, in the western end, were put ( h rough, but the return was not a payable one, being only about 15dwts per lopi, and the-remainder camei'rom the winze and eastern drive on the footwall/ leader, which continues (o look well in the face. The manager expects to connect this drive with the Deeside tunnel iv about three weeks", and as that will give him.an outlet for the mul* lock, he will be able to open" up a blr ak 'on the leader ao.~d.bave regular crushings. Moanatairi.—Williams and party have obtained the good result of 57ozs 16dwts gold from 6 tons quartz; and 6 tons for Simpson and party gave 6ozs 2dwts gold. Calran and .party have obtained Gozs. <]9dvrts. gold from 5 loads. * '• • Waitekauri.—Korth and party, tributers in No. 1 Company, to day banked ISozs 12dwts gold.
