C. J. Winder applied for an accommodation license at Tairua. —The Native Assessor said he would be in favor of granting the license, as he had been in favor of granting the others, but he intended to " keep his eye" on them during the coming year.—Mr Whitaker appeared for the objectors, Ratciiffe, Ryland, and 97 other residents of Tairua (whose names appeared on the petition handed in), and Mr Miller appeared for thejapplicant, contending that every name on the petition should be erased, as to none of them was appended the particulars mentioned in the Act, viz., a statement that the person was over 21 years old, and one showing the distance their residence was from the house for which the license was applied.—Mr Whitaker contended that though the petition was not strictly in accordance with the Act, it was still a good petition, and it was for the Bench to deoide on the license. The petition was no doubt got up by the Tairua residents in ignorance of the strict provisions of the Act.—Mr Miller drew the Bench's attention to the words that they "shall erase" all the. names to which the particulars named were not attached.—The Bench retired for a few minutes to consider the question, and on resuming their seats the Chairman announced that they considered the petition informal.—Mr Miller asked who Mr Whitaker appeared for, and that gentleman acknowledged that be could not " appear " for anyone, but as two or three of the objectors were present, he would merely "give them any little assistance he could."—C. J. Winder deposed that the signatures of those on his application for a license were those of the nearest residents, the district being very thinly populated. His house was nearly completed. A license had been previously granted to a much inferior house close to his new one, but it had expired, and a renewal had not been applied for. The lists in Mr Miller's hands conteined the signatures of 99 Europeans and 136 Maoris living within 10 miles of his house, who were all in favor of the license being granted. An accommodation house was greatly needed.—Mr Ryland examined the witness, contending that some of the names on the application for a license were not residents in the district. —Mr Ryland deposed that he objected to the license on account of the bad effect it had on his men, who while under the influence of liquor were more liable to aooidents, and caused a great deal more trouble in the community.—To Mr Miller —Winder's house was 9 miles from the house at which the Union Co. gave accommodation, and the men would go that distance for a drink.—Constable Joyce stated that he was stationed at the Union Company's mill, which was about 9 miles from Winder's. He bad inspected the house, satad it was not yet finished. Unless for the matter of drinking, no accommodation house was needed where Winder's house stood. The license previously held for a house there, by Cleaver, was cancelled by the R.M. here. When that license was in force, there was a deal of drunkenness in neighborhood, but such was not the case now.—To Mr Ryland: I know all the householders in the vicinity of Winder's bouse, but X do net reoogoiie *uy of the

signatures on the application as those of householders.—The Bench retired to consider the evidence, and after a few minutes' consultation, the Chairman announced that the license would be granted, 'subject to the applicant finishing the house before next licensing meeting. (Left Sitting.)
