Fatal Accident.

A man named Robert Pollock, aged forty, was working in a . scoria pit at Mangere to-day, loading a cart, when 100 tons of stuff came down, completely burying him. It took seven men anhour and a quarter to uncover the lifeless body. The maa who was worjsiug with him w*3

also injured on the chest. Pollock was a single man.

Large Fire in Auckland,

A fire broke out at one o'clock this morniDg in the block of wooden shops in Victoria street west, which destroyed throe and damaged several others. The shops burned were occupied by Gadd, fruiterer ; Carr, bootmaker ; and Kirkman, milliner. The fire originated in Gadd's shop, which is in the centre of the block, and it spread so rapidly that the Brigade, though early on the spot, \ had great difficultyjin checking it. Gadd's house was owned by Mrs Wallace, and was insured in the Northern Co. for £300, and the-stock and furniture for £200 in the South British. The.premises are occupied by Carr, Kirkman, Richardson, and Johnson and were owned by Mr Ball, of Mount Eden, and the insurances are not yet ascertained. Carr, bootmaker, was insured as follows : —Furniture £100, stock and fittings £100, both in the New Zealand; Mrs Kirkman had her furniture and stock insured for £200 in the Norwich Union. There are other policies on the adjacent buildings, but they will only be partial lopses. At the scene of the Victoria street fire a fresh outbreak occurred at five o'clock .this morning. Senior branchaian Harley and branchmea Moore and Heaps took the hose upon the verandah to play upon the flames, when the verandah suddenly gave way, and all fell heavily to the pavement beneath. Harley was injured in* ternally, and suffered severe pain ; Moore was injured in the hip and shoulder; and Heaps has a broken ankle.
