Correspondence.

Theae columns are open to all correspondence of pubuc interest, but we do not hold ourselvesresponsib c for che o- m ons o£ writer-. Correspondence must in ail cases be ruib n 'cated by the real name and address of the writer—not necessarily for publication, but ts a guarantee of good faith.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—l trust the Borough Councillors will grasp the subject of retrenchment at their next meeting the same as if they were administering their own privai# affairs. The report brought up at las* meeting is an abortion, and does not touch ths matter in the place that retrenchment is most needed, viz., the office. To my waf of thinking the following reductions, &&,, could be made;— • To Town Clerk,

£250; Valuer. £156 ; Assistant Oi«rk (to also be Inspector of Slaughterhouses,, Health Officer, &c), £130; Messenger £25. I fail !o see what is wanted, as afc present, with an Assistant Clerk, £91 (who is wrongly styled Messenger), and J. B Mason, who, with perquisites, gets £200 per year; one intelligent man could do both their duties and have plenty of time to spare, and at the price, viz., £130. This would bring the salaries of office to £562 per year, a sufficient equivalent for the work. Trusting that you will persist in justice being done to the ratepayers,—l am, &0., BUEGESB.
