The Kauri Battle at Hikutaia.
As we chronicled yesterday four members of the Police Force proceeded to Hikutaia in connection with the dispute which has arisen between the employes of Mr R. Blair, and those of, the Union Sash, and Door Company regarding the right to cut kauri trees in the neighborhood of Block 3, Hikutaia. The police were armed with warrants for the arrest of seven men charged with forcible entry, and upon reaching the' spot where;! the alleged disturbance arose, the men, were arrested unresistingly, and brought into the Grahamstb'wn lock-up.' They, were very shortly'afterwards admitted 4^ bail, and appeared at the. Police Court , this morning charged with ; entering with force of arms, to wit, ■ pistols," saws, sticks, and other offensive weapons, into a dwelling at Hikutaia in the possession of Henry Thompson and others,and unlawfully, violently, forcibly, injuriously, and with a strong hand expelling Thompson and others therefrom. L. Ehrenfried, Esq., J.P., occupied the Bench. The names of those charged are Walter Birch, James Fletcher;. John West,! George McClair, Charles Clay brought; Thomas Hopkins, and a native named George Johnson. Upon the charge being read, Mr Lush, who appeared for the prosecution, appliedfor a remand for, eight days, and Mr Miller, who defended the ac* cased, did not object, provided the case Would be gone into on the 21st inst. The Bench granted the remand and admitted the defendants to bail in one surety of £10 each in addition to their personal recognisances of £20 each/ i JMr^Di-vid Murdoch, of Auckland, was surety for the men.
