COUNTY COUNCIL.
After we went to press last night the following business was transacted :—
LETTERS WEBE READ—
From the Under Secretary for public works, iv reference to the Council's application for £5000 under sections 12 to 15 of the Roads and Bridges Construe tion Act, stating that only one-fifth (£1000) had been granted for roadmaking, and that it would be necessary to take a poll of the ratepayers on the question.—lt was decided to spend the money in the metalling of the main road between Puriri and Hikutaia; to take a poll if necessary, but to inform the Minister that the special rate already made, more than covered the required subsidy of the vote in question. From H. Graham, Secretary to the Paeroa Licensing Committee, forwarding an account for £10, for his services as Secretary.—Resolved that the Council recognise no liability. From E. T. Dufaur, solicitor, Auckland, on behalf of Mr Thorpe, Ohinemuri, stating that he had been instructed to take proceedings against the Council for damage done to bis client's land, unless the outfall drains from the Rotokohu swamp were enlarged by the Council. — Resolved that the Council do not recognise any liability it the matter.
From J. Brown, asking the Council to complete the repairing of the middle portion of the road between Kinsella's farm and the Waitekauri battery, as the hill track was almost impassable,—Referred to the Board of Works to report.
From the manager of the New Prince Imperial G.M.Co., asking that the customary allowance for Christmas week be made in the water account.—Resolved that the usual allowance be made to all the batteries.
From J. Bailey, manager of the Auckland Agricultural Co., re rates charged for land held by the company in the Waitoa Highway District, asking if the Council had power to enforce rates there, and if so, agreeing to the money being spent in the district, as the writer was not aware of any work being done there by the Council.—-Resolved that the information be supplied, and the writer informed that the rates collected on the west batik of the Waihou for the past three years had been spent there. From the manager of the Queen of Beauty G.M.Co., asking the Council to grant the water being used on the same terms as to the old company, that is, free of charge till the mine i 3 paying expenses; they were trying to make arrangements to lessen the amount of water used.— Referred to the Water Race Committee to report, no action being taken in the meantime.
From the manager of the Kuranui Hill G.M.Co., asking if the Council would lay mains to the battery capable ofsupplying a water-wheel. —Resolved that the Council cannot lay the pipes. From the Parawai Inspector, fully bearing out the complaint made by Mr Dodd, of the Kauaerariga Valley, as to the nuisance caused by the manure Mr Stevens deposited on his. land.—A caution had already been sent to Mr Stevens. From several residents in Parawaj, asking that the footpath on the south side of Fenton street he repaired, and from a number of Totava settlers asking that a branch road up to their properties might be repaired.—Eeferred to the Board of Works to report on. From residents in Agustus and Sandes streets, Block 27, asking that the water supply pipes be laid in the streets mentioned.—Referred tq the Water Race Committee fa report. "
BEBORJS, The Board of Works report was received.—«A motion by Cr Deeble to expunge that portion relating to the Tararu tramway was negatived, and the report was adopted. The Registrar of Dogs reported th,at 213 collars had been issued, total receipts from which, leas commission, amounted to £43 Ss.—Keceiyecl.
The Surveyor's report was read,- the Board of Works being requested to report od the recommendations re the Sauaeraqga and Junction roads.
The financial report showed the receipts to hare been :-=-From Government, £1220 17s 4d ; local revenue, £159 11s Id ; to balance, £3033 Is 6d. Total, £4433 9s lid.—Expenditure; Bank Balance Ist January, £3876 10s 3d ;. December accounts paid in January, £556 19s Bd. Total, £4433 9s lid.—Liabilities: Balance brought down, £3053 Is 6d. January accounts—Under Roads and Bridges Construction Act:—£l2o4los. Subsidised Goldfields' Works : Ofanui road—A. Barber £120, wages', £8; garaka road— J. Pufieh, £13 3s; .Karangahalse road.—
Wages £62 5s 6d, Quinnand Sheehy £28 63, W. Bertram £2 5s 6d. Hastings Riding (wages), £60 15s; Waiotahi Biding, do., £34 3s ; Keuaeranga Biding do., £35 13s 8d; Parawai Biding, do., £28 lls 6d; Kauaeranga Valley Road, P. Trainor's contract, £90; Totara Biding (wages). £32 7s; Ohinemuri Biding, do.. &c., £64 6a 6d ; water race (wages), £76 13s lOd ; water race (other accounts) £19 2s Id ; printing and advertising, £25 15s 3d; stationery £1 17s; travelling expenses (Surveyor). £17 4g 6d ; aid to drainage: Deep Level Cross, £40; Dart G.M.Co., £45; messenger, £3 ss; salaries, £53 6s Bd.—Total liabilities, £5169 18s 3d—To debit of General Government: Under Roads and Bridges Construction Act. £1249 14s; two-thids as subsidy on goldfields works, £156.—Net balance, £3764 4s 3d, OTHER MATTERS. Another month's time was granted to the Moanatairi Tramway Committee, owing to the absence of Cr Fraser.
A. letter prepared by the Chairman in reference to the deviation of the Owharoa main road, near McLoughlin's, referred to when the Minister of Public Works was here, was assented to.
With reference to the letter from the Under-Secretary for Public Works re goldfields tracks (published by us on Saturday) the Chairman stated that all the plans ready would be forwarded nest week..
