Tannery and Boot Factory Company.
Id response to an invitation to those interested in the establishment of the leather industry at the Thames, a meeting of about thirty persons assembled in the Borough Chambers last evening. Mr M. C. Hickey was voted to the Chair. The Chairman informed the meeting that some few particulars had been gathered regarding the industry proposed, which pointed out the advantages to be derived, not only in the way of profit to shareholders, but as a means of employing capital and labor in the district, and thus advancing its interests, and-quoted figures showing that the establishment of such works could not, if properly managed, result in anything but success. The meeting entered—in a conversational manner —into the subject, and- the advisability of opening up the leather manufacture alone, or amalgamating it with bootmaking, was freely discussed. It was pointed out by the Chairman that the promoters of the scheme did not intend to enter into the retail sale of boots, or in any way attempt to —as a speaker put it —" go in for a cooperative store;" the operations of the company would be wholesale. After a long discussion, Mr J. Bateman moved, and Mr S. C. Macky seconded that a committee consisting of His Worship the Mayor, and Messrs Murdoch, Dean, Lawrie, Bateman, Culpitt, Townsend, Whitehead, Bennett, and Hickey be appointed to obtain all available information regarding the industry and report to a meeting to be held on the 20th inst at the same place. Mr Hickey was appointed hon. secretary, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
