Thames High School.

The first meeting of the new Board of Governors was held in the Borough Chambers this morning. Present: Messrs Brodie (who was voted to the Chair), J. Wilson, Bagnall, McGcwan, and Marshall.

The appointments of Governors were read, and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr McGowan, the Mayor was elected Chairman of the new Board.

A Government voucher for £102 ss, goldfields revenue, aud a cheque for £649 13s 4d, part proceeds of recent sale of S. Mackay's lease, were received.

A letter was receired from Miss Kinder, stating that neither she nor the Bishop had understood the arrangement as the Secretary stated.—Resolved that a reply be sent to the effect that no arrangement had been made with the Bishop.

The trustees of the Ladies College Fund (Messrs Steedman and Murray) wrote stating that they were willing to hand over the money for the purpose of establishing a scholarship, if they could legally do so.—Resolved that the. grant be accepted, and that Messrs McGowan, Marshall, and the Chairman be a Committee to bring up a report on the whole question of scholarships. The Chairman of the Piabo County Council wrote that, having been informed that the Board was willing to spend some | money in metalling Kilgour street, Waiorongomai, the Council was willing to assist in the work.—Besolved that the Council be informed the Board has no further funds at its disposal for the work, and that the Chairman must have been misinformed.

In reply to a letter from the Warden's department, recommending that a portion of the bush land on the endowment, between the buck reef and the Waiorongomai creek, should be surveyed, and roads laid off, so as to suit it for residence sites for the miners, it was resolved that the matter be left in Mr Bagnall's hands to report on. The following were appointed a visiting committee for the year : —The Mayor, and Messrs McGowan, Wilson, and Brodie.

The request of the Harbor Board that the High School Board take up some of the former's debentures was postponed to the next meeting.

Ec the recommendation of the old Board that the lessees of sections at Te Aroha be compelled to cultivate their land, it was resolved to consult the solicitor and see what the Board's powers were.

It was resolved that the attention of the Secretary to the Education Department be drawn to the inconvenience which had been caused by the delay in appointing the Governors.

The usual monthly accounts were passed for payment. The Visiting Committee was requested to report on the question of obtaining additional playground room, and also to draw up the annual report.

Applications for the post of assistant lady teacher were received from J. M. Fraser, of Grafton road, Auckland; E. Clarkson, Pukekohe; McKenzie, England ; C. Spence, Waitatuna; and K. Colebrook, Kemuera. Considerable discussion took place on the merits of the various applicants, but ultimately it was unanimously decided, on the motion of Mr McGowan, seconded by Mr Bagnall, that Miss J. Mcßenzie Fraser be appointed for six months, the appointment to be permanent if the applicant was found suitable.
