OUR MINES.
NEW PEINCE IMPERIAL. The No. 2 reef was again broken down last night and this morning in the winze below No. 5 level. A clay head has just passed through it, and below this the lode has opened out, there being quite 2|ft. of crushing dirt in the bottom of the winze at present. The solid quartz is on the footwall, and in this colors of gold were seen mixed with the minerals, which continue as good as ever. The stope on No. 1 reef, No. 1 section west, above No. 4 level, continues to show gold freely. Work has been resumed in the stopes on this reef above No. 3 level, and also in the eastward stopes on No. 2 reef above No. 4 level. DEEP LEVEL CKOSS. The pump was stopped this morning, but it will probably start again on Saturday. As soon as the water is but, the manager will start crosscutting at the 640 ft level to pick up the gold^beariog leader discovered in the rise. The crosscut will commence at a point immediately on the shaft side of the rise ; 30ft of driving at the most should cut the leader, on which there is quite 60ft of backs here. Gleaning up took place this after* noon, and the month's return will be to. hand tomorrow. CALEDONIAN. The leader cut in the crosscut at No. 2 level last week has been driven on towards the winze a distance of 10 feet. Colors of gold were seen freely until today, when the leader split iato a number of small stringers covering a width of about 2 feet. These, however, appear to.be coming together again. Five head of stamps are employed at the Herald battery, and the t dirt is shaping for a payable yield, ,
NEW DIAMOND. When Mr Benney took charge of this mine a few weeks ago, he examined the workings and recommended the directors to sink on the reef from an intermediate level 50ft above the low tunnel, and to rise from the latter place. Both these works were started last week, one shift of two men being employed in each place. The winze was commenced at a point where a hole had been dug two or three feet close to a slide which dips very flat, and the rise was begun alongside what the manager is of opinion is the same slide. The winze is seven feet deep, and in breaking down the reef for the first tima yesterday afternoon good colors and dabs of gold were seen. The reef, is two feet wide, arid the precious metal was well ! distributed through it. A windlass will be rigged to-morrow, arid after then the men in the rise will be removed to the winze. There should be about 80ft in length on the dip of the slide, which the manager intends to follow in the winze. GOLD RETURNS.
