This day. At the Police Court this morning Harriett Broughton, of the Provincial Hotel, was charged with supplying liquor to a drunken man. The drunkenness was admitted to a certain extent, but for the defence it was contended tkat the liquor was not" sold "by the innkeeper, in accordance with the Act, but by the barmaid, and that the drink was purchased by another man, who shouted for the man who was intoxicated. It was also stated that the barman did not know the man was drunk. His worship overruled the law points, and on the evidence of the police convicted the defendant. He allowed the right of appeal on the law points, if it was wished, or would give a small penalty. Mr Barnicoat, for the defendant, agreed to the latter alternative, and a fine, of 40s was imposed. His ■ Worship ruling that it was not necessary in these cases to endorse the judgment on the license.

At the sitting of the Police' Court this morning, a settler named Thos. Hollywood was fined £10 for cruelly illtreating a horse by over-riding it. The evidence went to show that defendant was drunk, and rode the horse (an old racer named Astronomer), to such an extent that it fall down on the road from pure exhaustion. Its legs were the size of a man's thigh, andy one- of the back tendons burst right through. The sides of the poor brute were lacerated with the stirrups, and the mn.n was seen hitting it over the head with a riding whip to make it go.
