AUCKLAND.

This day.

According to the Herald, the selection of Capt. Fisher, of the Loongana, at present at the Mauritius, for the position of Harbourmaster and Harbour Pilot at Auckland, has caused very considerable surprise in shipping and commercial circles, and it is stated that outside influence was brought to bear. Writing to the Herald regarding the outcry in England concerning the failure of the Mataura's frozen meat, Mr Joseph Banks says:—" My opinion is that it is impossible to arrive at success in our climate during the'summer months without freezing works on shore. I happened to be Home when the Opawa arrived from Dunedin, and I saw some of her cargo in just as bad a condition as part of the Mataura's, but for some reason the matter was kept quiet, and the cable news stated that her shipment arrived in splendid condition, which was an untruth, as I saw some of hef sheep sold as low as 3| per pound." A deputation interviewed the Mayor yesterday in reference to the proposed establishment of a Female Reformatory. The Mayor promised all the assistance in his power, and during the interview offered thesuggestion that reformatory work might be made a branch of the recently formed Benevolent Association, but under the management of the subcommittee of that association. The project of amalgamating the Prisoners' Aid Society, which embraces only male prisoners, with the above association, was also alluded to.
