Yesterday. Criminal Sessions.
Alfred Meyde, for forgery, was sentenced to three years; Tooria, a native, for wholesale sheep stealing, to three years ; Paratinu, a native, for breaking and entering, to fire years. John Fitzgerald, for larceny, had his sentenced reserved. A true bill was entered against William Good, for maliciously wounding a steer. This day. Arrived, this morning: The steamer City of Sydney, and, after taking on the mails, she sailed at one p.m. At the Police Court this morning, Edwards, the pedestrian, was charged with committing wilful and corrupt perjury, by swearing at the R.M. Court yesterday that his signature to a cheque was a forgery. It was stated that a warrant had been issued in Wellington for his arrest, but the Court decided, however, in the absence of the warrant, that it could not take action on the telegram, and dismissed the case. Edwards sailed by the mail steamer, for 'Frisco, this afternoon.
During the holiday week nearly fourteen thousand people left Auckland by rail for the races and elsewhere, being three thousand more than last year.
The Harbor Board request pilot Burgess to resign, in consequence of the many complaints against him, and also instruct pilots in future to take no liquor from ships when leaving them. A Rationalistic Association has just been formed here, Mr A. Campbell president, which contemplates holding Sunday services in the forenoon. Sabbath School in the afternoon, and Social Gatherings, lectures, and debates on Sabbath evenings. At the settling on the Auckland races this afternoon, the total amount paid was £3443 2s, the principal sums being— Vallance, £714 8s; Pilbrow, £517 15s ; Major George, f£429 8s; Bobbett, £422 15s; Butler, £280 ss; Lennard, £214 14s.
