The B.s. Australia, with the December English mail, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 22nd ultimo, one day later than time table date. The s.s. Zealandia, with the December colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 30th ult., three days earlier than time table date.

The Agent-General telegraphs the departure of the Northumberland with 160 immigrants, and the Rangitikei with 341, both for Auckland.
At the inquest on Thos. Pickers, who hung himself on New Year's Day, the verdict was that deceased committed suicide while suffering from temporary insanity. ' A young man named K. Broadbent, a draper's assistant, has been arrested on a charge of larceny as a servant. At the meeting of the Council of the Teachers' Institute to day, Mr Henry Worthington, of Auckland, was elected President; Mr D. White, of Dunedin, Secretary ; and Mr J. G. Scott, of Christchurch, Treasurer. It was resolved to hold the next meeting in Auckland on the 6th January in next year.
