AUCKLAND.
This day.
The withdrawal of Turquoise from the Auckland Cup, and Salvage being entered for a minor event at the Summer Meeting in Mr Vallance's name, has caused quite a sensation in local sporting circles.
The man Doidge, who was arrested for larceny in connection with the Whangarei elopement case, proceeded to Whangarei last evening in charge of a constable. The following thirteen cricketers have been chosen for the match against Canterbury :—Barton, Blair, Arneill, O'Brien, Testro, Yates, Eobinson, Lankham, Crilli Bowden, Mills, Ewing, and Porch. Hopes are entertained that Mrs Mary Anne Wilson, who attempted to*poison herself by swallowing the beads of lucifer matches, and is now at the hospital under medical treatment, will recover. She is tolerably easy, and suffers little paia. The effect of the recent bad weather is shewn in the fact that the Sanitary Inspector reports that during the past fortnight thera hacl been reported 10 eases of measles, three of scarlet ferer, and two of typhoid fever,
