OUR MINES
DAET.
This mine has, through the discovery of rich gold in the stope* above No, 3 level, come to the front with a rush as a good gold producer, and. the return from the crushing now going through the milt bids fair to reach quite 300ozs. Cleaning up and retorting will take place either on the Saturday or Monday before Christmas Day. The specimens secured yesterday and the day before are undoubtedly the cortinuation of the run of gold worked on and above No. 2 level by tho old pro* prietors. At that level the besl gold' was got some distance—7o or 80ft— eastward of where it is now being obtained, proving that tbed'p of the ran is very fut, but also auguring well for. the richness of the block now being opened up. In the drive at No. 3 level only lOlbs of stone was bagged, in the leading stope 201bs, in 1 the secocd stope 2201b5, and the reef in the third will probably be shot down on Saturday morning, over the run. A small break occurs in the reef, which is three feet wide, just where the gold is fout?d, the precious metal being obtained from both sides of this, and there are also-some'large mineral veins striking iot) the reef at this point. The leading stope has been; carried eastward 50 feet, or about half way to No.-l winze j the reef here is 2) inches thiok and looks well, strong blotches of corrse gold being seen in the quartz. Jo:he se: ,nd stope hit! only been advanced 24 frat, and tbe third was started yesterday, but cone of Ithe quartz in it had been broken at the time of my visit this morning. The western drive has yet about IGO feet to go to reach the slide; the reef in. the face is split up at present, though the country surround* ing it is excellent.' Work here will be resumed after the holidays, when- it is probable that stoping will also be com* menced in this direction, .■■. / , DEEP LEVEL GBOSS. The loader in whioh gold was found yesterday in the riso above the 640 ft level is underlying too fast to keep it in the rise, which has now passed it, and no more quartz will therefore be broken down. It is probable that a crosscut will be driven seaward at this level to see what leaders beside the one in question there are in this direction, but itisunlikely thatanything will be done till after the holidays. The contractors for connecting the-(JptOft. and Imperial No. 5 levels have yet about 75 feet to sink and rise to oomplete their contract Cleaning up and retortiag|wiH probably take place before Christmas. DAEWIN. . .;■ The reef in the western drive at"the 150 ft levekwas takes down again tewjay; it continues a fine strong, wettf defined reef, carrying good minerals, but no gold was seen. This is the only work in progress below at present. The machinery ia working smoothly and well. GOLD EETUfiNS. Moanatatri.—Guthrie and party bare crushed 1 loads of general dirt and a parcel of specimens, obtained from the [■No.. 9 reef in Heldt's section, for-the j excellent return of 68ozs melted gold.— A parcel for Eneebpne and party yielded | loz 17dwts gold.
