BATHS.

(To the Editor of the Evening Stan)' :

Sik,—Some short time sinoe you had a leading article on the necessity of pro ridin p; bathing facilities, in the Thames Borough. For years the subject has-been, •talked about, but, judging by the indifference shown by the City Fathers in the past, we shall probably not see any public baths for some years to come. In most large towns (if not in all), in the United Kingdom, a hot bath can be had for twopence, and a cold one for a penny-, while those who can afford threepence are supplied with an amount of convenience which borders on luxury. I see no reason why we should not be able to enjoy % » warm, cold, or swimming bath. The baths (if built) would be self-supporting, and, therefore, the sooner they are built the better.: The advantages; of;; cleanliness, in preventing disease^ are so well known, that argument on the subject is almost unnecessary. It is, perhaps, not so generally known, however, that uncleanly persons sometimes breed diseases which they communicate to the comparatively cleanly. So important is .cleanliness, that many religions enjoin it as a sacred duty. The advantagerof learning to swim is obvious. How helpless anonswimmer is if, by an accident, he or she should get out of his or her' depth ? Ilow many valuable lives are lost for want of this accomplishment.—l ana,
