OUR MINES.

DEEP LEVEL CEOSS.

The specimens and picked stone accu-; mulated during the month, about 2cwt in all, were treated at the Herald mill today, and retorting takes place tormorrow: morning.. A fair return is expected. In the mine the drive southward on the fcotwall branch of-the cro&s-reef from, Ihe slopes has holed through into the stopes on the footwall branch of No. 2 reef. It is now proved that the leader which was found striking off to the sQutb~eastj was really the;! footwall branch of itbelcrbssreef, the reason 'it was not.. discovered in the drive being that it waa merely a clay formation at that point. It is the manager's intention to j d rive south on this leader,.as fromitscourse, there must be a large block on ifc;before it touches the beach slide. In,the contractors' winze a clay head has crossed from • the footwall, heaving the leader, which was merely a clay seam, and the men are now sinking in the sandstone, as it would lose too much time to divert the winze to pick up the leader again at present. NEW EUREKA; (OTUNUI). : ; The mine manager reports that a leading stope has been carried eastward 28ft and westward 25ft. A second stope is being carried east, and is in 6ft froth the rise. "The reef eastward averages' 6ft in width, and produces a large quantity of crushing dirfc, which appears to be of good quality, showing colors of gold. The j western stope is on the hangingwall branch of the reef, which is 18-inches wide, heavily mineralised, and showing gold in places. A start has been made to open out oh the footwali • branch of the reef in this end. This body of quartz appears to have been missed in driving. MOANATAIRI EXTENDED. Mr Coutts received a telegram from the directors this afternoon, stating that the tender of George Lsith and party, at ! £2 9s 6d per foot, had been accepted for sinking the/company's shaft. The men will start work to-morrow. ■ MARTHA EXTENDED (WAIHI). The manager reports that for last week's run with 20 head ho obtained 950z3 of amalgamV The erection of the additional ten head taken from the Martha battery was very nearly, completed when the report was forwarded, and it was expected that a start would be made with them early this week. , GOLD RETURNS. £ „ Don PedeoV—Wilsoaand party,: tributes, have banked 38ozs. 17dwts. melted gold. ;.,,. „.. „,
