[Received Oct. 27, 2.10 p.m]. London, October 26. Capt. Mayne Reid DeadThe death is announced of Capt Mayne Reid, the well-knownjnovelist, aged 65. Only £1000! It has transpired that the French Cabinet recently proposed t3 the British Government that as reparation for the treatment of the jter.Mr Shaw, missionary, at Madagascar, they should award him £1000 as compensation, and make a suitable apology. The proposal has been under the consideration of the English Cabinet, and it has been decided that the French offer should be accepted. The promoters of the New Guinea JCompany hare written to Lord Derby that he has entirely mistaken the objects they have in view ; these are, they state, purely peaceful, and for trading purposes. They ask His Lordship to accord them an in* terview, so that the intentions of the com* pany may be fully explained.
[Received* October 27, 2.15 a.m], London, October 25. A proclamation has been issued by the Parnellites announcing that a meeting of the party and its sympathisers will shortly be held at Innescarra, one of the north isles of Arran, off the coast of Donegal. Pabis, October 25. The French Chambers were formally opened to-day. The official Yellow Book regarding the Franco-Chinese difficulty was tabled, and confirms the recent intelligence that negotiations between the Marquis Tscheng and the French Government are at a standstill. Documents show that the Chinese Government demanded that Tonquin should be evacuated by the French forces, and that China shall exercise exclusive control over Bed River. It is further made apparent that the French Government hopes that the reinforcements despatched to Tonquin will accomplish the fact of bringing China to reason. London, October 25. The latest news to hand from South America shows that the Chilians have now evacuated all the towns of Peru except Arequipa. It is further announced that General Iglesiae has been formally recognised as Dictator of Peru. Intelligence has been received from Hayti that a native outbreak has been renewed, and that five hundred residents of Port-au Prince have been massacred by rebels, . [Received October 27,1.15 p.m.] London, October 25. Tenders for the Otago Harbor Board loan of £200,000 at 5 per cent., and a minimum of £95, were opened to-day. The total amount offered is found to be £311,000. Tenderers at £95 12s 6d will receive 60 per cent, of allotment, and tenderers above that price in full. The ship Mirzapore, bound from London to Melbourne, ran ashore at Bologne. The captain and crew landed safely, bat the vessel's position is critical.
London, October 22. Telegrams to hand from Malta and Trieste report that a severe shock of earthquake was felt at those places today. HoNGKONa, October 22. Latest intelligence from Tonquin states that the Anamite possession at Blacknuh is now fortified with Krupp guns, and that the French troops have consequently deferred their projected attack on that place.. Telegrams also to hand state that Hairphoog is threatened with attack by a band of pirates numbering fully 1000 men. ~ Intelligence has been received from Valparaiso that a final treaty of peftce has ,
been signed between Chili and Peru, and that preparations are being made to evacuate Lima End Callao.
Dr Magee, Bishop of Peterborough, who has been in a precarious state of health for some time past, has suffered a relapse, and much anxiety is felt for his recovery. St. Peteesburg, October 23.
Several arrests of Nihilists in the ranks of the Russian Army in Caucausia have been effected, and a commission has been appointed to examine the state of the troops in that district. London, Oct. 25.
Lord Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, writing to the promoters of the company which has been formed for the colonisation of New Guinea, says that Government cannot permit the company to carry on ita projected operations, and that, if the latter is attempted, Dcs Vceux, the Governor of Fiji and the Commodore of the Australian station, will be called upon to interfere and protect the islanders.

The Marquis of Landsowne arrived at Quebec to-day, and was received with great enthusiasm. There was no foundation for the fears entertained that an attempt would be made on the life of his Excellency.
