Mr Alexander McArthur (of the firm of W. and A. Me Arthur), of Auckland, who met with an accident while out shooting, by the accidental discharge of a gun, has had a successful operation, performed on his eye, and it is hoped that his sight will be saved.
Tenders are invited for the Otago Harbor Board Loan for £200,000 at 5 per cent. The minimum is fixed at 95.

London, Ootober 11.
The total reserve in the Bank of England in notes and bullion is £12,000,000, being £200,(30 below the reserve of last Thursday. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has further fallen 2 per cent, during the week, and is now 42 per cent. The bank rate of discount remains at 3 per cent., and the market rate at 2f. Australiaa, hides are in good demand at an advance of to £d per pound. Best selected transparent kauri gum is quoted at £1410s.■■■■■-■ ■'•

:' London, October 10. The Aborigines Protection Society has directed the attention of Lord Derby to the recent cruise of the labor vessel Fasny, and to the charges made by Mr JVT. E. Morrison, the explorer, of the revolting {treatment to which the. native women of Polynesia had been subjected, and Lord Derby hag requested the Governments of Queensland and Fiji to report upon the matter. Bishop Short was interred to day at Watlington Church, beside the remains of his parents. The steamer Maranga, built for the Queensland Shipping Company has XLfi.de her trial trip and averaged 14 knots.
Speaking at a luncheon on board, Sir Charles Lilley, Chief Justice of Queens-* land, warmly condemned the apathy of Lord Derby with respect to the annexa tion of New Guinea.
A body of Roumanian soldiers seized an Austrian barracks on the frontier. The Austrians, however, recaptured the position, after making six'y prisoners. The Times states that Sir.H. B. W. Brand, G.C.8., is about to retire from the Speakership of the House of Commons.
London, October 11. The Order of the Garter has beenconferred upon the Duke of Argyll. Many of the Austrian and German papers are advocating a systematic colonising of the New Guinea by Germany.
