SUBVEYOBs' EEPOET.
The surveyor reported as follows:—! have the honor to report that during the past month the several roads within the. County have been maintained and re paired as well as the limited number of men authorised for this kind of work would admit, My indisposition during the lattep.. pa.£t of the month has. retarded calliDg fop tenders for authorised works on goldfields roads, but the necessary pegging out and calling for tenders will be proceeded with during the next week. THE MOANITAIEI TBAMWAY.
From Messrs Gordon and Small, w-. signing* their lease of the Mpa.riatairl tramway on account; ;p.f the Iteuben p&tr Qt.aLCo. pontiauing to tin mullock pa to tl\e lfae.—The Mining Inspector,
writing in reply to a letter from the Council on the above subject, stated that the Council were the proper authorities to take dction in the matter, but he was npt aware of any reserves on the Moanatairi tramway. Cr Eraser introduced a deputation of miners from the upper portion of the Moanatairi Creek. Mr Eadford acted as spokesman, and said owing to Messrs Small and Gordon removing the good wheels from the trucks, it was impossible to send down a single truck of quartz till something was done. If the trucks were put in good order the men would be able to bring their own dirt down. The original lease under which Small and Gordon took the tramway was laid on the table ; it provided that 13 good trucks should be left on the line.
The deputation then withdrew, the Council promising to make them acquainted with what was done. Cr Bagnall asked how it was .that ,the tramway was in such bad repair, when it was in good order when they took it over, and they were bound to keep it so. Either the lessees had not fulfilled their contract, or else the County officials had not been looking after the Council's property. After some further conversation Cr Porter moved, and Cr Bull seconded — "that immediate action be taken by the Council, through their solicitor, to recover from Mesrs Small and Gordon the rolling stock on the Moanatairi tramway as per original schedule."—Carried. [Left Sitting.]
