WANGANUI.
Yesterday.
A grand military funeral of Mete Kingi took place at the Mission Cemetery, Putiki, this afternoon in the presence of five thousand spectators and eleven hundred Maoris from all parts of the North Island. The pall bearers were twelve chiefs of high rank, including Major Kemp, Wi Paraha, and Eenata, of Hawkes' Bay. The Native Minister, Mayor of Wanganui Mr Gilbert Carson, Mr Watt, M.H.E., Mr Lewis, Under' Secretary} other officials and a crowd of Europeans and Maoris followed the coffin from the pah to the grave. About 230 Volunteers were present, under command of Major St&pp, they fired three volleys over the grave. The Burial Service of the Church of England wan read by the Rev. T. S. Grace and three Maori .clergyman. The day vras fine and warm, and observed as a ptthiic holiday. Mr Grace delivered a short address at the grave, first in Maori and then in English, referring to Mete Kingi's friendship and services to the pakoha, and his loyal support of the Government. After the funeral Mr Bryce inspected the Wanganui Volunteers, and warmly oomplimented them on their efficiency .appearance, and numbers.
