This day. The Eev. B. T. Ashwell, one of the oldest Church of England missionaries in the Colony, is dead.
True bills were also found against Annie Quinn, for uttering; Murphy, unnatural offence ; R. Goldie, breaking 'and entering. Ruku was sentenced to 12 months for horse stealing.
The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court commenced to-day. Mr Justice Gillies, in his charge to the Grand Jury said there were 23 prisoners charged with 17 offences; with the exception of two cases, all are of an ordinary nature ; these two were offences against property. In referring to the Catholic cemetery eviction case he said the essence of the crime was, the accused acted wantonly and maliciously, but if the Jury thought they had acted in a bona fide belief that they were carrying out the instructions of the proper custodian of the cemetery, they should be found not guilty. True bills were found against Mi, O'Brien, breaking and entering, and Ruku Ohitna, horse stealing ; the latter pleaded guilty.
