AUCKLAND.

This day.

A Wellington correspondent of an Auckland paper telegraphs that:—" Mr Whitftker'a consent to be one of the representatives of the Colony, at the Sydney Conference, was not definitely received till Saturday afternoon, but the matter is now decided, and New Zealand will be represented by the Premier and ex-Pre-ier, which is probably the most satisfactory arrangement that could hare been devised. I may add that the New Zealand representatives will go with the strong conviction of the desirableness of taking all available steps to prevent the flooding of the Pacific Islands with the scum of France, and the worst type of French criminals. I notice that a rumor has been gaining ground for some time, that Mr W. W. Johnson, on resigning the administration of Public Works and going Home, next autumn, Will succeed Sir F. D. Bell as Agents General; I believe I am warranted in saying that this report has not the slightest foundation in fact, that there is no present likelihood of Sir F. D. Bell resigning, or any probability that when he does resign, he will be succeeded by Mr Johnson. I should be disposed to point in quite a different direction, .if asked to name Sir. JP. D. Bell's most probable successor.
