OUR MINES.
NEW PEINCE IMPERIAL.
The 17 ewi of specimens treated produced 43530z5. of amalgam. This, on retorting gave the good return of 16620zs ;?old, which was reduced by smelting to i644ozs 15dwts, or an average yield of over I7dwts per pound. The final cleaning up for the month will take place on Saturday. The winze at No. 5 level is down about 25ft, and the country continues of an excellent class. A splice has occurred in the leader, which is small and lying very flat at present. Colors of gold are, however, still seen in the quartz. The seventh slope westward above No. 5 level is within a short distance of the Cross boundary. The reef here is not so defined as it was last week, but is looking well. The eighth stope is 50ft. past the break. The reef is a 1 compact body of stone fully 18 inches wide, showing colors and dabs of gold frealy throughout. The ninth stope is 10 feet through, the break, and the reef was taken down here for the first time today. It is 18 inches wide; gold, was seen freely, and a few pounds, of specimens were bagged. The face is now forward to where tbe gold was got in |the eighth stope. Tha tenth stope is past the show left in the back of tbe ninth, no haul ofl consequence having been obtained here. The reef is not so compact as in the lower stopes, but shows gold freely throughout. At No. 4 level, the break which crossed the drive on the No. 1 reef has been passed through, and the footwall of the reef picked up on the other side, it hairing been heaved to the left about two feet. No gold has been seen on the rr stern side of the break, but the quartz contains a good deal of ruby silver, which is an unfailing indication. The course of the reef is due north-east. The men are not working in the face at present, the manager having removed them to the stopes, being desirous of getting as much quartz as possible to the surface this week, in order to keep the mills employed while the new engine is placed in position next week. DEEP LEVEL CEOSS. The south crosscut at the 640 feet level is now in the Cross ground again, the corner of the Imperial having been passed through. The face is between 90 and 100 feet from the le;st leader cut, and e.ccording to Mr Bayldon's latest survey the hangingwall branch of the No. 2 reef may come to hand any day. The country is a good white saidstone, and a large mineral vein, in place? an inch thick, is running with the drive. A little water is issuing from the face, so a reef may be close at hand. Tbe manager is ronfidenf? of getting gold when he cuts the rraf. At No. 5 level the winze on the boundary is over 30 feet. The le deri3 from six mo. eight inches in width, and showed 'Colors of gold when last broken. A little water is roming from the leider, but not enough to c.use inconvenience. Three shifts of men are to be employed in this winze in order to get it down as quckiy as possible. No. 2 winze, on the footwall branch of the cro^-reef, is down about 20 feet. The reef is dYer a foot in thickness, but is not so compact as it was last week. Colors of gold were sc en yesterday in a small leader on the footwall. The fourth stope on this reef is nearly home to the end of the block opened up, while the fifth has just left the hangingwall leader. The sixth is half way between the winze and the junction. God is seen in all of these stopes, and a few pounds of picked stone have also come to hand. A drive is being put in couth on the footwall branch of the crossreef, from the fifth stope. The reef here is rather split up in the face, the principal branch being about six inches wide, but it has shown good colors of gold. The seaward drive on the habgingwall branch of the crossreef is making gocd progress, and the reef is looking much better. It is about two feec wide, a compact lode, and though no gold has been seen, the quartz carries plenty of favorable mineral. . On the footwall branch of No. 2 rocf, only one stopo, the fifth, is in progress. The lead looks well in this, showing gold freely, and occasionally yielding small parcels of picked stone and specie mens. A few pounds were taken from it this morning, gold being left showing. The general dirt has been shaping a little better this week than last. The manager has on hand 1601bs of picked stone and specimens, which will be treated _on Friday, cleaning up for the month taking place on Saturday. MAEINEE. The drive westward at No. 4 lev.el from the bottom of the winze sunk on the cross leader running between Nos. 2 and 3 reefs is now in about 12ft. The reef is split into two branches, but looks better than it did where first opened out upon. The' footwall branch showed colors of gold when taken down, and in breaking the hangingwall branch last night, strong colors and dabs of coarse gold were seen freely. The qaartz is from six to nine inches in width, and carries good minerals. There is a considerable, dis? tance to drive westward, about 100 ft, before the leader will junction with No. 3 reef, which should take place in the neighborhood of the shaft.
SMILE OF FOETUNE(OWHABOA)
This Company will clean up towards the end of the week, and the return should be to hand on Saturday next. Farmer and Sims, tributers, have crushed 25 tons of quartz for the payable return of 40ozs 6dwts retorted fold.
