Firs in Auckland.
A destructive fire broke out on Saturday night in Allen's drapery store, Vic-. toria street, which was destroyed as well as the premises of Williams, the^ tailor. It also partially damaged Atkinson's, the jeweller, and CabiU's, the draper, Alien's stock and furniture were insured for £550 in the Colonial, £250 reinsured in the Pboenix. Williams' buildings and stock were insured for £15C0 in the Norwich, Union, two-thirds re-insured ; Atkinson's for £250 in the New Zealand Office ; Cahill has £200 on his furniture in the Colonial, and £400 upon his stock in the North British. The goods were largely saved, except Allen's stock. Atkinson's and Cahills' shops belonged to J. W. James, contractor. His insurance is unknown as he is residing in the country. The fire was accidental; a candle on the counter fired some muslin curtains in the shop while Allen was turning off the gas at,the meter.
