TE ABOHA V. THAMES.
The above match was commenced this afternoon at the Parawai Gardens. The visitors arrived in the Despatch at about half-past twfilve, and were met at the Goods Wharf by a number of the members of the Thames Club. They the* proceeded to the' Royal Hotel, and both teams left for the Gardens in a drag at hal^past two. The Ts Aroha team is a heavy one, averaging fully 12st, while the Thames average, owing to some of the men picked being unable to play, is barely lOst. The ground, however, is dry,, whtch is to the advantage of the local team. Unfortunately, Irwin could not play, and Murray also did not come to the front, having hurt his foot; their places were filled by Gillies and McGregor. The game was arranged to be played in four spells of 20 minutes each. The following was the position of the men when play was started:—
Thames—Back, Lowe ; three-quarter back, Watene; half-backs, Christy and Jones ; quarter backs, Tregonning (captain) and Aperahama; forwards, Allom, Anderson, Douglas, Frater, Ogle, Bae, Taylor, Gillies, and McGregor. Te Aboha—Backs, Cook and MeFarlane; Half-backs, Brennan and Verity (captain); Quarter-backs, Whitehouse and Quigley; Forwards, Hinton, Burgess, Stewart, Smith, Trude, Gordon, Morgan, McDonald, and Coleman.
Mr W. H. Airey acts as umpire for Thames, and Mr D. R. Gellion as referee.
