Thames Borough Council.

The usual meeting was held last evening. Present: The Mayor, Crs Wilson, Carpenter, Veale, McGowan, Merinie, and Speight.

The three last-mentioned councillors, being newly returned, signed the custom ary declaration.—Leave of absence from the meeting was accorded to Cr McCullough owing to his unavoidable detention in Auckland.r—An application from Messrs Mennie and Dey for a supply of water with which to drive their machines, was referred to the Water Supply Committee.— Vouchers were received from the Treasury for £26 12s Bd, revenue from miners' rights; and 6s 6d fines under Borough

by-laws.—^A. letter regarding water supply was received from a resident of Irishtown i and referred to the Water-Supply Committee. —The report of the Works Conamittee was to the effect that having consideration to the better drainageof Sealey street, the formation of the footpath on the north side^of that street without first laying down a wooden or asphalt watertable is not recommended, but should the residents on the north side of that street make application for this footway to be constructed under By-law 7/ that the Foreman of Works be authorised to pror ceed with it. With respect to letters asking that certain footways be attended to,, the Committee had instructed the Foreman of Works to see to them. The asphalting of Mary street footpath \ will be proceeded with at once, the fillingin and water-table being now completed. Mr Miller, by instructions from the Committee, has commenced proceedings against Mr C. J. Stone for damage to the Becreation Ground, fence, &c, by his logs being carried by the fresh against same.-r-The report was adopted—Tenders for removing 300 loads of shingle from the channel of the Karaka Creek to Queen, Baillie, and Mackay streets were opened as follows : W. Ashby 2s 6d per load, and P. Maxwell 28 Id.—The latter was accepted.—The Water Supply Committee reported, recommending that as the County Council displayed a disinclination to meet the Council in conference re water supply matters, the application of Mr Fagg be granted for not less than a year, subject to certain conditions. The stoppage of water to Mr G. W. Clark's premises was attributable to the corrosion of the private supply pipes, and could be remedied by the householder at a cost of 15s.*-It was resolved that Mr . Fagg's waiter be supplied for six mouths at a charge of £2 10s.-—Accounts to the amount of £135 were then passed for payment.—The Committees for the ensuing year were appointed as follows :— Works: The Mayor, Crs Carpenter, Bawden, Mennie, and Osborne. Water Supply : Mayor, Crs Bawden, Speight, Carpenter, and McGowan; Charitable Aid: Mayor, Crs McGowan, Osborne, and Speight. Finance: Mayor, Crs Wilson, Veale, Osborne, and McGowan. Fire Brigade: Mayor, Crs Carpenter, Mennie, and Veale. Cemetery: Mayor, Crs Carpenter, Wilson, and Speight. Cr Carpenter moved that regulations be framed under clause 88 of the byelaws, defining and fixing the fees to be paid by hawkers and pedlars. He read a copy of the provision, and he proposed naming £1 as the license fee. His reason for proposing that the regulations should be made was that there were many traders from a distance plying in the Borough, which was manifestly unfair to burgesses in business who paid rates and taxes, and suggested that dealers in perishable articles of diet should be exempted from the charge.—The Town Clerk said this would free the Chinamen against whom the greatest objection existed.—lt was decided to obtain copies of the Auckland bye^laws in reference to hawkers, and postpone consideration of the subject until next meeting.—Cr Mennie gave notice that he will move at next meeting, " That the Council acquire by lease for a term of years, with a purchasing clause, the Waio Karaka Flat as a recreation ground for the burgesses." This concluded the business.
