Freights to Melbourne are 15s by sailing ship, and 20a bj steamer, to Sydney 15s and 20s, to Adelaide 22a 6d and 255, and to Brisbane 32s 6d and 40s. The tariff rates to New Zealand are unaltered, bat the experiment of direct steamers to that colony, does not promise well, the brokers having been compelled to take sailing ship rates in order to get cargo* When we find that even with these inducements goods are scarce, it shows clearly that Colonial firms are acting, as a rale, with great caution in making up their indents. This dullness of trade is severely felt by some firiia on this side who depend on colonial support", and in the absence of orders many may bo tempted to consign more largely than usual for financial reasons, and the fasilities given by Borne of the Banks for this class of business will assist in patting goods oa your markets on shippers' account. The Police Court was presided over to-day by Dr Kilgour and H. C. Lawlor, Esq., J.P. The only cases dealt with were breaches of Borough by-laws. The owner of a wandering cow was fined 5s and costs.
