OUR MINES.

NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL/, Owing tflhe slip on the water race stopping the Alburina and Grown batteries, the manager "decided ; t to retort theataalfcam on. hand, from general dirt up ttf Saturday last (18490z5.), and also that from thY 9 cwt. of specimens treated {201Xoqg,)« /'A (total, of 43.3 loads of general dirt yyore crushed, yiolding <>170z5.. reported "gold, while Ihe specimfins"'aare- 7870z«. f or an average of about Isdwts. per pound, the totatyield of gold from the interim retorting being ,14090z5. Should,, the stoppage. *be likely to last for more than two or three days.jthe manager will start crushing' at 1 one of mills with steam power, probably the Mftanatairi, but otherwise the<■ final cleaning up will only be delayed the tinie «f the stoppaße.^ The 2 cwt*. The leader in the ,dth. Bt ope is looking well, and gold is showing in the back for a length of fire or six feet. The precious metal is also visible in several places in fhe face. The sth atope is over 30 f»H wf.it of the break, and the bang*

ingwallJeader and No. 2 freef are together here, yielding a good supply of crushing, dirt.. The 4th and 3rd stopes are in one, and the two branches of the reef are together here also. The junction is dipping rapidly hillward, so as the stopes ascend the leaders will have to be worked separately for the whole lengthof the block west of the break. The stopes j east of the winze continue to yield good crushing stuff. At No. 4 level the drive east on the Mariner's reef is in .25 feet 'past the winze, which will in future be the dividing line between the eastern and western sections on this reef. The lode ml the face is about 5 feet wide, and gold is seen freely in breaking. Between the break and the winze, which block constitutes No. 1 sec* tion west, four stopes are in progress, the highest being about 25 feet from the level. In all the reef is of large size, and producing good crushing dirt. Several leaders strike off both on the hanging and footwall, in all of which gold is seen. The main hangingwall one is being opened up as the stopes ascend, and a drive has also been put in a few feet at the level, so that work could be started on it without any trouble. In order to facilitate the future working of another leader which drops into the hangingwall of the reef, branch passes are being made under it, so that stoping can be commenced whenever it is found desirable. A a soon as the four stopes in hand here have been carried up to the winze, the following ones will be carried along westward, and the dead ground at the break will be left standing, the stopea, on the seaward side being started from,, the Cross boundary and advanced in succession to the break. DEEP LEVEL CEOSS. The footwall leader in the drive at No. 5 level continues to look well, showing colors of gold each breaking down. The leading stope is stopped for the present, and the men are now starting the second one. A small clay head crosses the leader at this point, alongside which the Imperial men took out a parcel of stone yesterday. The drive hillwards on the crossreef is in about 20ft,, and it should be. under the winze from the level above before long, as the men can plainly hear each other working. A: small clay head crossed the drive three or four feet back from the face, heaving the reef folly five feet to the left. The quartz beyond this head looks well,, but no breaking down of the reef has yet taken place, the men being engaged stripping the mullock off the footwall. The leading stope is being advanced over this, drive, and the reef in it is fully 2ft. wide, and looking well- The winze from No. 4 level is down 90ft.. and is still being sunk on the footwall of the reef. QUEEN OF BEAUTY. ■ ■ Advantage will be taken of the stoppage caused by the slip on the water race to take out the old pump turbine and put in the new one lately made by Mr Judd, and which it is expected will give considerably more power with the same amount of water. A new pin in the sweep rod is also to be put in. The alterations will all be eonjpleted in two or three days; No stoppage of work will occur in the mine, as the men will, as soon as the water rises to the stopes above No. 10 level, be removed to'Nos. 9 and 8.'., In the former the stopes and drive will be pushed on, and at No. 8 a crosscut will be started to try and pick up the continuation ef the reef beyond: the slide, as has been done at Nos. 9 and! 10 levels. The wjnza on No. 1 reef at 3 level is npvrdpwnll feet. The main reef was. taken down to-day; it is 2 feet wide, well mineralised; and showed colon of gold. The hangingwall leader was also, taken down, and a,few pounds of. picked stone were seenred'from it.
