The trial lot from Dixon's reef put through at the Herald mill was cleaned up today, and the return from 15 loads of general dirt is 6ozs Bdwts melted gold, or nearly lOdwts per load. This is not so good a yield as was expected from the way the stuff shaped at first. MARTHA EXTENDED/(WAIHI)
The manager today brought down ,111 ozs retorted gold, the yield of 300 tons general dirt from all sections of the mine. The melted weight is lO7fozs, or an average yield of about 7dwts per ton. The -manager has only had 10 head employed on company's dirt hitherto, but during the coming month he will have 20 stamps, and expects to get a deal more- dirt through. Since taking charge he has at the Young Colonial level driven 70 feet in the centre of the reef, the drive being about 7 or 8 feet wide, and has also risen 25 feet, the dirt improving upwards. At the intermediate level, 60 feet above Young Colonial level, he has driven 200 feet, 100 of which is on the reef. At Fraaer and Darrow's level, 60 feet above intermediate level, he has driven on the reef 130 feet, and broken it down for 100 feet. Only the footwall portion, which is from three to live feet wide, has been broken here, the rest not being payable. The length of ; ground'now open on the reef is 600 feet, with backs of about 200 feet, and the crushing came from the whole length of this block, and shaped very regularly alt through, QUEEN OF BEAUTY; The main reef beyond the slide at No. 10 level was not taken down this morning on account of the timbering not beings finished, and the manager does not intend: to break it till Monday. The contractors I for driving 50ft west of the shaft will complete their distance in a day or two; and a fresh contract for 50 feet will probably be let. The quartz from here, about 20 loads, will be put through at the Moanatairi mill next week, aud the 10 head will afterwards be kept going on other dirt. A large return is upt ex* pected, as for some feet the reef did not look rery promising.
MARINER. *' The No 2 reef in the drive west at No. 5 level was broken down again this morn* ing. It keeps about the usual size, and though not carrying so much mineral as at last breaking, colors of gold were seen, and a good strong lode left in the face. The reef in the leading stope over the drive was also shot down, and a few colors of gold seen. The hangingwall leader is being driven on east at this point, towards its junction with the specimen leader. About 9 feet in length was taken down today, in breaking which several colors of the precious metal were seen. The leader is from three to six inches in width. LONDON. Stripping the No. 1 reef in the east drive at No. 5 level has been resumed. The treating of the trial lot from here was to have been commenced on Wednesday at Boll's mill, bat owing to a scarcity of water, crushing will not be started till Monday morning. A portion of the reef in the western drive has been broken down. No gold was seen, but the reef may improve in quality at* driven on, a* the country in the end of the dig is more favorable than when work was first started* The manager will before long start a winze on the reef at this level underneath » the old tributers'shot of gold. QUEEN OF ENGLAND. Some of the quartz broken from the eastern drive on the No. 1 reef ac No, 3 level has been saved and a trial parcel of : , 10 loads from here will be crashed next _. week; A trial lot from the western drive will probably be put through shortly. JBBVOIS. This company is sinking a shaft on the hill behind the faint works, and a depth of nearly 80ft has been attained. For the ' past few feet a hard bar ha? been sunk in. ■ but the manager (Mr Edwards) is of opinion be will get through this before long, as it is dipping acropg the shaft. It is intended to sink about 30ft more, and then crosscut east and west for two .lodes which are known to be in those directions. The cap of one of them was passed through in the shaft about 30 feet from the surface, bo the distance to drive for it should not be great. The reef on the west side of the shaft the manager expects to meet with just under the bard bar in band. GOLD BETUBNS. City of Manohistkb. —The proprie* tors of this claim, Scott and party, have banked Slozs 7dwts gold. Dulcibbl (Waibi).—Nicks and party, proprietors, hare finished a brushing of 200 tons general dirt at the Martha Extended battery for the return of 96oss retorted gold. ..!
