NEW PLYMOUTH.
This day.
Great dissatisfaction exists here as to the future policy of the Government re the extension of railway from Auckland to Waitara. Such a general concensus of opinion here has never been shewn in condemning Major Atkinson before. He said nothing about the subject in his New Plymouth speech, and almost as little to his friends and supporters ; tbe moat that could be.extracted from him was, that he wonld be favorable to the best route. People here interpret his utterances to mean that he is more in favor of a line through the Middle of the Island than the Auckland-Taranaki line. People hare no hesitation in stating this broadly; they further say there could be no Valid
reason given why the line should not hav c been extended both from Te Awamutu and Waitara* during the past year—still pushing on, and shortening the portions to be bridged.
