This day. Orer 50 students of the Auckland University will wear the Academic gowns next term.
■Mr Firth's body was recovered yesterday morning; a powerful Maori direr having succeeded in bringing it to the surface. It is presumed that heart disease was the cause of his death, as he sunk without uttering a cry, within a yard of another bather, and was a good swimmer ; in the absence of the police the inhabitants are at a loss to know how; to proceed.
Captain Shepherd takes command of the volunteer district, with the rank of adjutant. He served for a number of years with the 100 th regiment, from which he retired as captain. He went Home from New Zealand, passed his examination, and was appointed ensign to the 100 th regiment. Adjutant Shepherd is is a brother to the wife of the Hon. F. Wbitakejr and to Lady O'Borke.
