WELLINGTON.
This day.
A fire broke oilt in an unoccupied cottage in Adelaide road at 2 o'clock this morning. The building is owned by Mr John Blandford, and was destroyed. The fire then spread to the adjoining cottage, which was occupied by Mrs Scoones and family, which was also destroyed. Had it not been for a brick wall separating the cottages Mrs Scoones and family would probably have been burnt to death. The cottage is insured for £50 in the South British. Nothing is known as to how the fire originated. .
Mr H. Carkeek, the missing surveyor, has turned up all right at Urenui, near Taranaki, where he had gone for pro» visions, having run short for the past month. He was to go on to New Plymouth to«day. The Hawera Licensing Bench would only grant ten o'clock licenses; hitherto twelve o'clock has been the closing hour.
