Yesterday.

At an inquest on the body of John Reid (found dead in his bunk on board the s.s. Wanaka) a verdict was returned of " Death from disease of the heart."

The inquiry is going on before the visiting Justices into the management of the Lyttelton Gaol. The proceeding is being conducted in private. At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board a gratuity, equal to six months' pay, was voted to Mrs Kich, the widow of one of the Board's Inspectors. The vital statistics for May are: Births, 174; marriages, 49; deaths, 68.
