Production of Gold.
Public Opinion learns from the report of the director of the United States Mint that the production of gold and Silver throughout the world in 1881 was in. excess of that for the previous year, the value being:—lßßl: gold, 107,773,157 ! dols; silver, 97,659,460 dols. 1880: gold, 106,436,786 dols; silver, 94,551,060 dols. The largest producer was America, with gold to the value of 34,700,000 dols, and silver, 43.000,000 dols. The other countries range as follows :—Australia, gold 31,127,515 dols, silver, 227,125d015; Russia, 28,551,028 dols, silver 473,519 dols; Mexico, gold 989,160 doh, silver 25,167,763 dols; Columbia gold 4,000,000 dols, silver 1,000,000 dols; Germany, gold 232,610 dols, silver 5,576,699d015; Austrp-Hungary, gold 1,240,808d015, silver 1,303,280d015; Venezuela, gold 2,274,692d015; Africa, gold 1,993,800d015; Canada, gold 1,094,926d015, silver 68,205d01g; Bolivia, gold 72,315d0!5; silver 11,030,000d01s ; Chili, gold 128,869d015, silver 5,081,747d015; Spain, silver 3,096,220d015. The remaining supplies were furnished by Sweden, Norway, Italy, Turkey, the Argentine, Brazil, and Japan. The largest circulation of paper money in 1881 was by the. United States, which had no less, than 793,074,878d01s in value; the smallest was in Central America, which had only 163,347d015. The largest ciroulatiaaof gold was in France, viz., 874,876,Q00doiSy€rreak Britain being next with 592,000,000d01s ; the smallest amount was Peru, 62,Q85d015. The mintage in 1881 throughout the world was: Gold, 136,387,383d015; silver, 100,705,284d015. In the previous year, the amounts were: Gold, 148,645,236d015; silver, 83,397,154d015. The largest mintage was in the United States, wkic>i coined as follows: Gold, 96,850,890^' 0 'i 8 . silver, 37,939,203d015. Australia came next with gold to the value of 19,699,115 dols.
