AUCKLAND.

This day.

At the B.M. Court, Mercer, Messrs Hudson Williamson and C. S. S. George, solicitors, were fined 20s and costs for shooting native game out of season. They pleaded guilty, under extenuating circumstances, being misled by a Wellington telegram in the papers referring to a proclamation of the shooting season which they thought referred to Auckland district, whereas it subsequently transpired that it referred to Wellington district. The Magistrate acquitted the defendants of knowingly violating the law. ,

An accident, happily unattended with any serious consequence, happened to the Kaipara train shortly after passing Paeroa station. In turning one of those peculiar bends for which this line is famous, the guard's van left the metals, and was dragged in this stateacrosa the sleepers for a distance of 200 yards. The jolting and bumping was so serious that everything in the Tan became shattered, including the bail lamps, which were smashed, and Mr John Foster, of Waimaukau, was thrown out of the traiu. The guard, failiug to attract

the attention of the driver, and feeVin^ that the vans might at any second roll down the embankment, saved himself by jumping off just as one of the passengers was proceeding to the fore part of the train. He succeeded in signalling to the engine driver, and the train was at once stopped. The van was jacked back o* to the metals, and the train proceeded without further mishap.
