OUR MINES.

DEEP LEVEL CROSS

A portion of the quartz in the winze on the No. 2 reef was taken down to-day. Dabs of gold were freely seen, and a few picked stone bagged. The leader is from three to four inches in width. The repairs to the Big Pump were not completed in time to start this morning, but they will be finished some time to-night, when work will again be resumed. SEYMOUR. Good progress is being made with the sinking of the shaft, which is now down 50ft. below the adit level chamber, or 120 ft. from the surface. Should the country continue as favorable for working as hitherto, the manager expects to be down as far as it is intended to sink, 200 ft, in six weeks' time. The country is a good white sandstone, but a hard boulder has come in the northern end for the last few feet, making progress slower this week than usual. The water is still troublesome, but is kept under by bailing. Mr Jobsoa will inspect the boiler on Monday, and the manager will take advantage of the stoppage to ciit a drain to carry off the surface water, a good deal of which now soaks into the shaft, making it wet. -DART. The quartz broken out since the manager took charge, 11 loads in all, has been put through at Bull's, mill for the return of 9ozs 3dwts melted gold. Of this 3 loads from the winze on the. specimen leader gave 6ozs, the other two parcels, from the leader cut while sinking the pump shaft and the No. 1 reef at No. 3 level, being poor. The surface works are proceeding satisfactorily. The boiler is on the ground, and the bricks for building it in will be down from Auckland this week. The hole for the balance bob is being timbered up. The new engine will be brought from Auckland next week, and the manager expects to hare the foundations nearly ready for ifc by that time. The wator is rising rapidly in the shaft, but when pumping is started it will no doubt be easily reduced. BRIGHT SMILE. I Twenty pounds of specimens have been | obtained from the leading atope over the low level towards the Jamaica boundary. OWHAItOA. Hart and party, proprietors of the Lucky Hit claim, have put through 40 tons of dirt at the Smile of Fortune battery for the good yield of 57ozs 15dwts of melted gold. This is the last parcel that has been awaiting treatment since the flood a mouth or two back, and the full force of the mill, 15 head, is now employed upon the Smile of Fortune dirt. Cleaning up will take place at the end of the month.
