GISBORNE.

This day.

The Poverty Bay farmers express their approval of the decision of the Auckland auctioneers to sell cattle in future by weight instead of per head. The butchers, however, do not like the idea.

The manager of the South Pacific Petroleum Company reports that the new bore is down 100 feet. The bore is going through papa rock, which is very firm, and the pipes are going down plumb. It is believed the bore could be proceeded with without pipes, but their use is not to be dispensed with at present.

There is every promise of the proposed Gisborno Gas Company being successfully floated. The shares were subscribed for in one day. The company intend to retail coal, and the local coal sellers consequently manifest opposition to the corns pany. It is believed that the Cook County Council will succeed in getting threefourths in value and number to vote for acceptance of the loan of ten thousand pounds under the Road and Bridges Construction Act, although settlers in districts not directly benefitted manifested opposition. Miss Jane Brown, after serving in the Gisborne school as pupil and assistant teacher for six years, has been translated to the training college at Wellington in virtue of a valuable scholarship awarded her.

There were nineteen applications placed before the Matawhero School Commiittee last night for the position of master of the school at one hundred and eighty pounds a year. The appointment was given to Mr Harris, a southern candidate.
