The Bifle Bangerg were inspected last night by Major Withers, but oving to the inspection not being made at the usual time, the attendance was two short of the required number, and the muster will not therefore count for capitation. The men were put through drill aj usual, and acquitted themselves creditably. ■•;'
A dittioumt arose at the Borough Council meeting last evening as to the definition' of the word swine. One individual present said a swine was certainly an 'og, but although an 'og was a pig, a pig wasn't an 'og, any more than a mare was an awes although an awss wasn't a mare; after this lucid exp'anation the Council settled down to the idea that the word sine embraoed pigs generally j male, female, singular, plural, large and amall. Before the whole body was quite agreed on the subject the Town Clerk produced a diction" ary, and the Borough fathers sank back in their municipal seats hearing sighs of relief.
These is nothing like a conscientious ser* vant. The Press Association has a considerable number of those arlioles. We don't object to a four-roomed cottage at Invercargill ■being burnt down, nor do we assert any opposition to a parliamentary candidate being well received in the region of Beef ton—but when ire see that there has been something less important than a dog^fight in a big city wired from some centre of population, we begin to fear that public excitement may exceed wire charges.
The attendance at the Theatre last night was good. " The Gambler's Wife " was presented, and Miss Juno was as effective as ever in the part of Harriet Bouth. Mr Busseil was quite at home as Stewart South. The Jim Swain of Mr Modus was or edit ably performed, and Miss GreenleßS was very happy in her representation of Mrs Bainbridgc. Ws are requested to contradict) the statement made that the lady whose horse knocked a man down on the Kopu road on Sunday last rode on carelessly without ascertaining whether he was hurt or not. Directly the accident occurred the equestrienne pulled up, apologised to the. man, aiid after ascertaining that no serious injury had been inflicted went away. Upon enquiry at the Hospital the lady learnt that the man hal been there, but had left without being attended to, as his injuries were very slight.
A meeting was held in the vestry of the Shortland Wealeyan Church on Wednesday evening, to consider the best means of removing a debt of £250 on the church properties of tbe circuit. The Her. H. Bull presided, and Mr H. R. La wry, Convener, introduced tne business. Bazaars and gift auctions were mentioned as instrumental liquidators, but were not regarded favourably. Mr Miller thought an immediate effort might be made to clear off the whole amount and thus save the interest they were now paying, and he himself was ready to give £50.if the remaining £200 were subscribed. Mr Lawry_moved and Mr T. Eitching seconded, that Mr Miller's offer be accepted, and that a committee of ladies be Dominated to wait upon the members of the congregations of the circuit to secure their co-operation. The chairman moved and Mr T. Caeeley seconded, that the cordial thanks of the committee be preßentei to Mr Miller for his generous offer. The meeting then closed.
The friends of Mr John Smith, Wardsman in the Hospital, will regret to hear the loss he has sustained fey the death ef bis wife, which took place at the Hospital early this morning, after a short illness
The Governor visited the Onebunga ironworks yesterday, and watched the process of making wroaght iron from the Manakau eand. He expressed bis pleasure at seeing so important an industry established in New Zealand. In the experiments performed Waikato coal was used instead of charcoal, and these were so successful that coal will be used in future.
A man named O'Sbea stole the chalice and paten from St. Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland, but he was arrested, and the consecrated vessels recovered.
The case heard in Taranaki betwren Messrs Studholtne, Morrin, and Co. and Major Kemp and his people, with regard, to the Rangipo block, was amicably settled yesterday. The accounts gone into, show that a large sum has already been paid, and the balance is to be handed over to Major Kemp and his people as soon as they hold a meeting. All parties are now vatisfied, and M»jor Kemp signed a lease of the Murimoto block.
The excursion to Akaroa in aid of the Sailors' Home at Lyttelton is expected to net £400.
.An old man, named MoOullough, fe'l down an aba doned shaft at Hokitika on Friday last. The shaft was 50 feet deep, and Me Cullough was not rescued until Tuesday, after being in the pit more than four days. He is reported to be bruited, but no bonep broken. Once he reached within 20 feet of the top of the shaft, but could get no further. Fortu* nately his cries were heard by some children and this led to his discovery.
The Premier has positively declined to accept the counter proposals of the Harbour Boa d're the harbor and railway reclamation contract, and as. he left Auckland for the South yesterday the negotiations were some* what hurried. Another meeting of the Board in committee was held, but the strictest seereny regarding the business transacted has been maintained by the secretary and tho Chairman, notwithstanding the fact that the matter is one of public importance. It has, however, transpired that the matter has been definitely settled, and that the Harbor Board will fake over the contract for cutting down the hill at Point Britomart and Emily Placs the scene of the recent landslip, and filling up the basin with the stuff taken out. The responsibility h.s been ac« cepted by the Board, it being understood that every possible assistance will be rendered by the Government ia tho doubt'ul contingency claims for damages.
Theee girla were remanded by the B-.M. yesterday on a charge of aiding in the con* cealment of a birth. 'A fourth was implicated and has been arrested at Oamaru. Thpy will'^B brought up on Saturday. The child is supposed to have been stillborn.

At a meeting of the Council of the University Colloge in Auckland, it whs* decided to cable to the Agent-General, Sir F. D. Bell, requesting him to communicate the'intelligence of Professor Walker's death to his parents. It waß resolved to request Sir F. D. Bell to fill up the vacancy caused by Professor Walker's death from applications already received, if desirable. No news of the recovery of the body is to hand. It appears that Professor Walker had a ver/ valuable watch upon him at the time of the accident. It is contemplated to give the remains of the unfortunate gentleman, when found, a Masonic funeral.
